Recent Article - Scott is a true 'graveheart'
Not everyone can say they have set up a business after being inspired by a night’s sleep.
But for Scott Williamson this was the case.
He set up his business Grave Care Scotland after he woke from a dream and was left wondering who looks after graves when relatives can’t manage.
After a bit of research he discovered that graves were often untended due to people moving away or not being able to get to the cemetery as they were elderly.
Scott, who lives in the Stirling area, was further spurred on after his wife admitted she felt guilty that she couldn’t go to her parents’ graves and wanted to do something to help.
He decided to set up his business which sees him cleaning graves and also laying flowers for people who cannot get there or who perhaps are living abroad.
Scott said: “It makes me happy knowing that I have helped somebody. For a lot of people they feel it is important that the grave is maintained, looked after and flowers laid. If they can’t do it for various reasons they often feel guilty. If I can do that to help them then I am happy.
“I have already carried out work for people who live as far afield as Australia and Canada. I have also done work locally in Stirling and Clackmannanshire cemeteries. I have been asked to go to a grave in Brora to clean one dating back to 1850.”
Some of the graves are really old and Scott gives each headstone plenty of tender loving care.
“I find it really therapeutic and peaceful to clean and maintain the graves and headstones. I work closely with the local authorities who are responsible for the graveyards and notify them that I will be carrying out work in their cemetery. There are strict regulations that I have to adhere to.
To ignore them or break them, especially in a cememtery, would be disrespectful,” he said.
“If I come across any that are unstable or broken I will report them to the local authority and they will then notify the plot owner. I will not carry out repairs as I am not a stone mason.”
Scott will take a before and after photograph to show he has carried out the work and will also take photos to show the flowers he has been requested to lay.
He said: “This gives people peace of mind that the work has been done and they don’t need to feel guilty that they couldn¹t get to the grave.”
